The detection and study of neutrinos to learn about astronomical objects and the universe. Historically, astronomers have studied the universe through the visible light and other forms of electromagnetic radiation emitted by matter. Neutrino astronomy represents a complementary approach because neutrinos are fundamentally different particles from photons, the carriers of electromagnetism. Copiously produced by stars and other cosmic phenomena, neutrinos are the most abundant elementary particles in the universe after photons.
