A collective term for the signal transduction pathways that are activated by inhibition of protein folding in the endoplasmic reticulum (the location where newly synthesized, completely unfolded polypeptide chains fold into their native conformation), thereby coordinating adaptive responses to this stress situation. The unfolded protein response leads to increased synthesis of folding and degradative enzymes, as well as decreasing overall new protein synthesis, allowing the endoplasmic reticulum to better handle the load of unfolded protein.
